BEATA VERGINE MARIA DELLA MERCEDE Tra le famiglie religiose dedicate alla Madre di Cristo, vi è l'Ordine della beata Vergine Maria della mercede (Misericordia), fondato a Barcellona nel 1218, per la redenzione dei cristiani prigionieri, da san Pietro Nolasco (†1256) con la collaborazione di san Raimondo di Peñafort († 1275} e di Giacomo I († 1276), re di Aragona. La beata Vergine sotto il titolo «della mercede» è venerata soprattutto in Aragona e in Catalogna,... come pure in numerose regioni dell'America Latina. La fondazione dell'Ordine Mercedario, fu ispirata a S. Pietro Nolasco da Maria: i Mercedari, fissando la loro attenzione su Maria, le hanno attribuito il titolo della Mercede o della Misericordia perché, come diceva Alfonso X il Savio: "Redimere gli schiavi è opera di grande Merced ", ossia di Misericordia. E' un Ordine religioso profondamente inserito nella vita della Chiesa che opera soprattutto là dove è necessario portare la liberazione redentrice del Vangelo, dove l'uomo viene sfruttato e oppresso, dove la sua fede e la sua dignità di persona sono in pericolo. L' Ordine è composto di sacerdoti e di fratelli cooperatori che vivono la stessa vita religiosa.
